Computing: Old Operating System Software

Acrobat Reader - The free PDF reader from Adobe also existed for OS/2.

Whereas modern operating systems include applications to view PDF documents, at the times of the first windows releases and OS/2, third party software was necessary to open these files (cf. my article Viewing PDF files on old Windows releases). The most commonly used application was Acrobat Reader from Adobe. Acrobat Reader also exists for OS/2. I successfully installed Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 for OS/2 on my OS/2 Warp 3 (blue spine) VMware virtual machine. I suppose that it also works with OS/2 Warp 4, maybe also with older versions of OS/2.

Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 for OS/2 can be downloaded from the Util - PDF page of OS/2 Site. The download is an executable, that actually is the Acrobat Reader setup program. The file is lots to big to fit on a floppy diskette, thus you have to burn it onto a CDROM (aka to create a CDROM ISO) to transfer it to your OS/2 machine.

I copied the file aro2e30.exe from the CDROM to my harddisk and ran it from "Icon View" in Presentation Manager. The screenshot below shows the first window of the setup program.

Acrobat Reader on OS/2 Warp 3 - Installation notes

Installation is straight forward: After having accepted the license, you have to choose the installation directory (default is C:\ACROBAT3\READOS2); the new files are copied, and that's it. The setup program creates a new folder in OS/2 Presentation Manager. Beside the launcher for the application, you'll find there a shortcut for the uninstaller and another one for the read.me file.

The screenshot below shows the file acrobat.pdf (included with the installation files) opened in Acrobat Reader 3.0.
